Winner of $550,000 home at Pegasus Town announced03/03/2016 - Events, Latest News, Pegasus Community
A 10-minute stroll around the corner from his home turned into the luckiest day of Stephen Hardman’s life after he learned today (Thursday 3, March 2016) he was the winner of Pegasus Town’s house and land package worth over half a million dollars.
Stephen Hardman and his partner, Leanne Scott are current Pegasus Town residents having moved to the growing township a few years ago. They were attracted to Pegasus Town’s natural beauty, strong community spirit, proximity to Pegasus Bay Beach and network of cycling and walking tracks.
The highly anticipated ‘Win a Home’ competition closed last week and then, under the close supervision of lawyers, Stephen Hardman’s name was randomly drawn from the thousands of entries.
Stephen and Leanne were having lunch when he received what he thought was a prank call.
“As the phone rang I just thought ‘oh no’ because we were having a really nice time enjoying a glass of wine and it was a really happy moment but Leanne made me answer it,” the 49-year-old said.
Feeling the colour drain from his face, Stephen was left utterly lost for words and unable to comprehend that he had actually won the $550,000 Pegasus Town home. “I’ve never won anything in my life so I just couldn’t believe it,” he said.
Pegasus Town spokesperson David Martin says the competition was a celebration of the great community Pegasus has become. “It’s not everyday you get the opportunity to call someone and tell them they have won a house worth over half a million dollars.”
Stephen and Leanne first visited the house in September, early in the competition.
Stephen recalls the “house felt spacious and light” from this initial visit but was resolute not to get his hopes up because he believed that “nothing would come of it”.
For Leanne, the house was love at first sight.
“It was just wonderful. I loved the open plan kitchen and dining area, study nook, large bedrooms and the beautiful, separate front entrance into the house,” she said.
“We just love the clear air here. As soon as you get to Woodend you just feel relaxed, and it’s the kind of community where people say hello to one another,” Stephen says.
David Martin was delighted to share the Pegasus Town experience with more than 27,000 people who came through the home during the six month competition in the hope they would be the lucky winner.
“We thought getting 15,000 people through the house over the length of the competition would be an amazing outcome so it was absolutely fantastic that we ended up attracting more than 27,000 people. Those who visited the home during the competition ranged from young professionals through to families and retired people and they came from throughout Canterbury, and as far afield as Auckland. It was just an amazing result. It really reflects how attractive Pegasus Town is to a diverse range of people,” David said.
The ‘Win a Home’ competition’s major prize was a newly constructed, three-bedroom house on a 551 square metre section in Pegasus Town.
Pegasus Town is a 25 minute drive from central Christchurch and home to more than 2500 residents. It offers a mix of housing options ranging from substantial homes on large sections to smaller, more affordable houses closer to the town’s retail centre.
“To be in a position where we can stop worrying about money and take a more leisurely approach to life, and just enjoy each other is really amazing,” says Stephen.
